He Shatters the Spear As I watched the movie, The End of the Spear, I was particularly struck by one scene involving Kimo, the first male of the tribe to become a “God-follower” and Mincaye, the hardened, vengeful leader of the tribe. Prayer for Our Nation Heavenly Father, we come to you this day asking you to protect all of our military personnel around the world. Help them be strong and courageous, not to be afraid or to tremble at their enemies, for you, O Lord God are their hiding place and their shield. They wait for your Word. Let evildoers depart My Gift to God When I was in high school, one of my coaches gave me a placard that read, “What you are is God’s gift to you. What you make of yourself is your gift to God.” She asked if it meant something to me and I said it did, but what it meant to me was not what the Bible teaches. Giving Up Self A few weeks ago, a co-worker asked me what I had to give up to lose 30 pounds. My response was “Nothing. I can eat whatever I want. I just have to fit it into my allowances for the day.” Later, I thought, “That’s not correct.” What I gave up was myself. Expectations The beggar that Peter and John met expected them to give him some money. He did not expect them to restore his health. Why not? In those days, it was a common belief that people got sick or were born with disabilities because either they or their parents had sinned. Remember what Jesus said in John 9:3 as He dispelled this myth? God's Love “God cares too much to be unconditional in his love.” When I heard the radio announcer on "Joni and Friends" say those words, I asked myself, “What can be better than unconditional love?” God's Favor Every year at summer camp during my childhood, I looked forward to the closing night’s devotional. All I really remember now, except the candlelight, is Luke 2:46, the theme verse of the camp. I’m not sure why that verse has stuck with me over the years. Why is it so hard to say the word? Why is it so hard to say a loved one has died? Nothing Can Separate Us On February 27, 2000, a man I didn’t know wheeled a lady into the church auditorium. My immediate thought was, “I bet that’s Lynne.” Body Stewards Twenty-five years ago, my body weight was well below the maximum allowed for military enlistees. I told a friend I couldn't imagine myself at that maximum weight. Fifteen years later, my weight had surpassed that unimaginable number of pounds. Why? I didn’t make it to the memorial service, but I listened to a recording of the service and the words her daughter-in-law Bethany had written regarding a discussion with her 7-year-old daughter From Ruin to Reconciliation When we look at people around us who have not become “new creations” in Christ, we tell ourselves that we are pretty good people. It is easy to see the “speck” in our brother’s eye. Why? Spirit-Led As I sat in the pew Sunday morning, reflecting on Christ’s death, I thought of Terry Rush’s statement that non-Christians and Christians who are not led by the Spirit can exhibit some of the fruit of the Spirit, but it is only Spirit-led Christians who can demonstrate that fruit when times get tough and the heat is turned up. Then, I thought about Jesus being God and having the option of not going to the Cross. Peace, Not Fear “A diagnosis of Breast Cancer brings with it confusion, fear, hopelessness and isolation.” So says the website of Breast Cancer Support Services, Inc. This is not the case for everyone. More of God “Mary, I want you to imagine that the Lord Himself would come and sit beside you at the end of this meeting and say to you, ‘Mary, if you can tell me right now what you perceive to be the greatest need of your life, I will meet that need.’ I wonder what you would say." Effective Helping Jesus has called us to follow Him. One of the ways we do that is by helping others. He said that the world will know we are His disciples if we have love for one another. If we love our Christian brothers and sisters, we will help them in whatever way we can. But Jesus did not restrict His help to only those of His religious persuasion. He healed Samaritans, Romans, and other Gentiles. As we follow Him, we, too, must reach out to those outside of our spiritual family. Look to Jesus Everything seems to be out of control, and there doesn’t seem to be anything we can do to improve the situation. Everywhere we turn, we see more of the same. Yet Jesus said, “Don’t be anxious.” How can we not be anxious?
