The Prudent Proverbs 31 Woman

By: A Onah

"She shops around for the best yarns and cottons....

....with money she's put aside, plants a garden."

(Proverbs 31: 13a, 16b - The Message)

What an inspiration the Proverbs 31 woman is! When it comes to money matters, she is an example. She is one to be entrusted.

God wants us to be faithful stewards of what He has invested in us. The parable of the talents is an excellent example of a master entrusting various amounts of money to his servants before setting out on a journey. When the comes back it is time for review (Matthew 25:14-30). One of the three servants however fails the test. He chose to hide his money meaning it yielded nothing and gives back the master just what had been given him initially. Would the Proverbs 31 woman done this? No. Here we have an example of a woman who knows how to make best use of spending her money and also making wise investments.

We are told the Proverbs 31 woman knows how to shop for the best yarns and cottons. This tells us the kind of person she is. The King James Version says she 'seeks' these things. That tells us she is someone who does research! That in a nutshell is what good shopping entails. Researching will show you what is excellent value for money. Therefore buying cheap is not necessarily always the best solution. Neither is buying the most expensive! Longevity and costs are two factors that has to be taken into consideration in deciding whether to buy a particular item. These days we have the internet available to us and that makes shopping from the comfort of our living room a present day reality. Overheads are much reduced for items sold over the web, meaning that the same item in the shops costs less on-line. It 'pays' to do your research. No matter how much you think you can afford something, it is still wise to be prudent how you spend it! We have a Father who is watching over us to see how we are making use of what He has blessed us with. And He is a Father who is always willing and ready to bless these efforts.

The Proverbs 31 woman is also a saver. Wow! She puts money aside ... for an investment that brings return. Saving is one thing. But what do you save for? The Proverbs 31 woman is mindful of being 'fruitful and multiplying' - the first mandate given to man at Creation. She can be likened to the first and second servants in the parable of the talents who went to work immediately with the money that had been entrusted to them. Their money multiplied and their master on return was very pleased, resulting in more being added to them.

Don't just have the mentality that you are saving for a rainy day or for the purchase of a plasma tv or whatever. Save towards 'planting a garden'. One sure way of receiving a definite return is giving your money to the gospel. It takes faith and obedience of course to make that step but is sure a worthwhile one.

Bear in mind, a prudent person is NOT a stingy person, NO! We read in other verses of the Proverbs 31 woman, how she reached out to the poor and needy. A poor and needy person looks out for gifts and/or money and not just with assistance with the odd errand or two. Let's get real, it takes more than that. We can therefore be confident that the Proverbs 31 woman was generous in her giving.

Be wise in your spending but also generous in your giving especially to the things of God. Solomon made a 1000 sacrifices resulting in God blessing him beyond measure. The Proverbs 31 woman would have been blessed beyond every measure in her finances. How about you?
