The Poison of Evolution

By: Ransomed ransom

THE POISON OF EVOLUTION

Ideas have consequences. Good ideas lead to good consequences while bad ones lead to bad consequences. In this article, I want to deal (briefly of course) with some of the very negative implications of evolutionary thinking, which have no doubt served as poison for human society at large and very specially and specifically for the Christian church. Many young good meaning Christians, when get exposed to this kind of thinking and find themselves totally unprepared and unarmed to face it, succumb to this poison. The poison of evolution has permeated all strata of society, especially the academic and intellectual community – the ones who, in the final analysis come to mould the thinking and behaviour patterns of the masses. Many philosophers, psychologists, sociologists, scientists and science popularizes have infected millions of human minds with this dangerous virus. This in turn has led to definite changes in the worldview and behaviour patterns of people across the world.
The effects of evolutionism have been varied and devastating. The following are some of them.

1. ATHEISM: The most basic effect of evolution has been the growth and promotion of atheism or no-godism, the view that there is no God. Atheistic thinking is the most direct conclusion of evolutionism. Charles Smith, president of The American Association for the Advancement of Atheism (AAAA) made this frank and unmasked statement, thus exposing the very mind and intent of evolution: “Evolution IS atheism” and “Evolution is the cornerstone of atheism”. Woolsey Teller, the vice president of The AAAA brought out the logical conclusion of subscribing to evolutionary thinking when he said, “The idea of god can not be reconciled with our knowledge of evolution”. Evolution is an attempt to do away with God and to explain all reality in purely naturalistic and mechanistic ways. If all that exists has come through the agency of CHANCE plus ENERGY plus TIME plus NATURALISTIC FORCES, then God and his role as the creator of the universe find its way out. Evolution replaces God and substitutes Him with impersonal and mindless chance. Evolutionism indeed is atheism.

2. EVOLUTION IS ANTICHRISTIAN AND ANTIBIBLE: Evolutionary thought has had its effect, in one way or another throughout the world but the most direct onslaught of evolutionism has been on Christianity and the bible. Evolutionary thought has played a critical role in undermining, even destroying the ‘Christian consensus’ in the west. Its tentacles have not left even the east untouched.
Thomas Huxley, Darwin’s bulldog, made this statement “These essays are for the most part intended to contribute to the process of destroying the infallibility of scriptures”. Dr. Arthur Brown was right when he said, “There is no doubt that the theory of evolution is the most potent weapon ever forged for the purpose of undermining and destroying the Christian faith”. And H.G.Wells captures the logic involved in this process of “undermining and destroying the Christian faith” well when he said, “If all the animals and man had been evolved in this ascendant manner, then there had been no first parents, no Eden and no fall. And if there had been no fall, then the entire historical fabric of Christianity, the story of the first sin and the reason for an atonement, upon which current teaching based Christian emotion and morality, collapsed like a house of cards”.
Many anti-bible, anti-god and anti-Christ thinkers and philosophers have ceaselessly used the evolutionary worldview to destroy Christian faith and doctrine. Evolution indeed is the most potent and all-inclusive weapon designed to rob God of His dignity and His exalted position as the sovereign creator and the first step in this coup attempt is attack on the bible and Christian doctrine.

3. EVOLUTION ROBS MAN OF HIS ‘ALIEN DIGNITY’: The bible very clearly teaches that Man is a special creature, the crown of God’s creation and the apple of His eye. He is a creature not made in the image of some ape but in God’s own image with God’s intimate involvement in molding and making him (Gen. 1:26,27; 2:7). Man is therefore a hybrid – he shares the humble origins of the created order (Adam was created from dust) but on the other hand, he has the ‘image of God’ in him which makes him special and gives Man what Martin Luther called ‘the alien dignity of Man’.
Evolutionism is just the opposite. Here Man is not a special creature in the image of a personal God but is an improved animal species in the image of the apes! Evolutionism is a reductionism of the highest order. It robs Man of his special-ness, of his dignity and his “mannishness”(Francis Schaeffer’s term). Man here becomes a bundle of atoms and molecules, just chemicals and matter and at the most a ‘glorified’ ape.
This kind of thinking has lead to serious consequences in human society, a discussion that lies beyond the scope of this article but the openness to, and the statistical rise in cases of abortion, suicide etc. are some of the consequences that evolutionary thinking has fathered.

4. EVOLUTIONISM BEGETS HUMANISM: The Greek philosopher Protagoras said, “Man is the measure of all things”. This statement perfectly captures the essence of the philosophy called humanism. If one cancels God from the scheme of things, obviously, the highest reference point left in one’s worldview is Man. He becomes the absolute reference point for all things be it ethics, religion, genetic engineering etc. Man becomes ‘autonomous’ (to use Schaeffer’s term). He is no longer responsible to God, for he is now the architect and the apex of his own reality. Accountability to God becomes a non-issue. Infact there is no God, all that there is, is matter, and Man, its highest expression.
In humanistic thinking, Man rids the universe of God and becomes his own god. It is rebellious man’s attempt to be the center of the universe and push God out of the scheme of things. This mindset is clearly reflected in this brief exchange between Napoleon and the French astronomer, Laplace. Napoleon remarked that Laplace had eliminated God from his astronomy. Laplace replied,” Sire, I have no need of that hypothesis”. This is what Jeremy Rifkin had to say to express this God-negating and self-asserting conviction of a humanist: “We no longer feel ourselves to be guests in someone else’s home and therefore obliged to make our behaviour conform with a set of pre-existing cosmic rules. It is our creation now. We make the rules. We establish the parameters of reality. We create the world and because we do, we no longer feel beholden to outside forces. We no longer have to justify our behaviour for we are now the architects of the universe. We are responsible to nothing outside ourselves, for we are the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever and ever”. Evolutionism leads to humanism, which is actually fallen Man’s attempt to create a Man-centered universe without God.

5. THE DECAY AND BREAKDOWN OF MORAL ABSOLUTES AND ETHICS: If fallen man becomes the measure of all things, if he becomes the final reference point of all things, and if there is no one other than himself to whom he is accountable for right and wrong, then what man begins to call right is right and what he begins to call wrong is wrong! There are then no moral absolutes that are given to man by a being morally perfect and higher than him. Man himself becomes the chief arbiter of all ‘right’ and ‘wrong’. Dr. M.R.DeHann once remarked, “I do not doubt that the tremendous upsurge in crime, sadism, sexuality and bestial acts can be directly traced to the teaching of evolution”.
Further, if man is just an animal and all that matters in the final analysis is the ‘survival of the fittest’, then survival is the final ‘morality’ that must concern man. This in turn implies ‘the law of the jungle’, that ‘might is right’ and the elimination of the weak and the preservation of the fittest. T.H.Huxley, one of the all time top advocates of evolution said: “It is the law of the jungle that has to be the directive for ALL so called human progress”. It is because of this kind of thinking that Hitler felt it right to exterminate about six million Jews in the Nazi gas chambers. This was a manifestation of the evolutionary mindset, its ideology and its consequent ‘morality’. If there was no God then Hitler became a god and the designer and prescriber of what is right and noble and what is not.

6. RACIALISM AND MILITARISM: Darwinian concepts – ‘the struggle for existence’, and especially ‘the survival of the fittest’ were quickly applied to human societies by many thinkers and philosophers beginning with the nineteenth century English philosopher, Herbert Spencer. It is called “Social Darwinism”. The German philosopher Nietzsche and the dictator Adolph Hitler are two outstanding examples of social Darwinism. Hitler believed that “The whole nature is a continuous struggle between strength and weakness, an eternal victory of the strong over the weak”. He actualized social Darwinism in human society and, as I have mentioned before, exterminated six million Jews because of this kind of evolutionary worldview.
According to the atheistic philosopher of the “God is dead” theory Nietzsche “The supreme standard of life is purely materialistic vitality and power to survive”. General Von Bernhardi said, “War is a biological necessity of the first importance, a regulative element in the life of man kind that can not be dispensed with. War increases vitality and promotes human progress”.
It is pretty obvious that such a worldview has lead to unspeakable sufferings, horrors and injustice to human beings in concentration camps and elsewhere. It has surely led to making the world more hellish.

There are numerous other areas where the poisonous effects of the evolutionary worldview can be clearly seen like Secular psychology, New Ageism, genetic engineering etc. Evolutionary thinking has been regularly used to create a ‘no-godism consensus’ and to promote a ‘fallen- Man-centered reality’.
Christians ought to be aware of the subtle ways in which even the seemingly ‘innocent’ views often contain anti-God, anti-bible and anti-Christ thinking. Unfortunately, some ‘Christian’ theology too has made room for this kind thinking and has at times accommodated a lot of ungodly and unbiblical stuff.
Let us remember the fact that the devil, apart from doing many other things, generates ideas. He too is a thinker and a teacher. Paul writes to Timothy in 1 Timothy 4:1”The Spirit clearly says that in the later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons”. To the Corinthians he wrote, “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ”.
The battle for our minds is on. Lets be on the alert and stand guard.

AN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: I feel the need to acknowledge the fact that a small booklet (unfortunately I have forgotten its title) by Dr. Henry M. Morris that I read several years ago serves as the main source of several of the ideas and quotes that this article has.
