The Not So Meek Jesus

Many well meaning Christians have, for some years now, preached a lop-sided gospel. They have either presented a God of pure wrath or one of only mercy, each side hoping to balance the other. In recent years, the gospel shared with others has leaned towards focusing on Jesus as the meek and humble Lamb of God who is too gentle and loving to ever chastise anyone or even rebuke their sin. Likewise, most followers of Christ are seen as feeble "door-mats" that rarely have any answers to life's hard questions. Sadly, such scenario tends to be true.

The appearance of Jesus, the Lamb of God, is by no means, confined to the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and St. John. However, these New Testament books dominate as references to understanding who he is. They are most important in the comprehension of his redemptive work at Calvary. Nevertheless, those who believe and those who don't, may begin to realize that the meek and humble Lamb of God is not beyond being provoked to wrath and has an awesome but frightening appearance. This appearance was hidden from the natural eye while he was incarnate on earth. The appearance of Jesus the man was as ordinary as any other man on earth. This is evidenced by the scriptures which never speak of him having a strange or supernatural look, except during his transformation. People are seen interacting with him like they did with anyone else, except for those who believed on him. It was given to them to know that he was God; they therefore, bowed and worshiped the Lord in flesh (KJV, Matthew 8:2, 9:18).

The appearance of Jesus the Lord is far from ordinary. It is shocking to many who read the description of him for the first time. It is also shocking and sad that many professing Christians who attend church regularly are unaware of the scriptures' description of what Jesus looks like.

Revelation 1:12-16 reads, "...I turned to see the voice that spake with me...one like unto the Son of Man. His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow and his eyes were as a flame of fire. And his feet like unto fine brass as if they burned in a furnace. And his voice as the sound of many waters. And he had in his right hand seven stars. And out of his mouth went a two-edged sword and his countenance (face) was as the sun in his strength."

If one will only let his mind see such a fearful description, he can understand why the mere sight of the Lamb of God caused John to fall down as dead (Revelation 1:17).

Those who have a true walk with Jesus continue to view their Lord through eyes of adoration for their sweet Savior. However, his description helps to serve as a reminder of his glory and power. This remembrance can be encouraging in times of despair. It can also serve as a sobering reminder of the need to come to repentance as, "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge" (Proverbs 1:7).

Revelation 6:16 warns that there will be people who'll say to the mountains and rocks, "fall on us and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb."
