Thank You For Our Fuel

By: Kay

Thank you Lord for the fuel.
Bless this fuel to the nourishment of our transportation needs
You are holy and mighty and are here helping us who call your name
CHRIST JESUS

Today the fuel shortage is greater in Forsyth County than all the counties in the State of Georgia. That is how it looks for us who live here. I thought I could ride it out- literally. My enormous tank SUV has kept us in check for the past four years with children, pets and carry anything philosophy. So not willing to withstand a new car payment, we thought we could watch the dollars stretch for fuel until our three children leave for college. All was inching away as needed until today. The light flashed red.

I filled my tank days ago. Actually I do not remember the exact date, but I do remember being warned by a lady at our bank the prices were going up. She was right. As I finished my errands I saw signs popping new prices a dollar, two dollars, Three Dollars! Over the price from the day before. A thought came to my head not to panic, and I drove to our little station next to our subdivision. It worked the price was still as it was the day before and the two cars at the tanks were finished. I felt relief and accomplishment as if I had just won a contest. So today that prize ended with the red light warning to find fuel fast. I covered all the stations on my way that I suspected might have expensive fuel. No one was open. The bags hung from the nozzles, the no crossing tape blew in the breeze like our town was deserted. I drove and drove even through parking lots seeing if one pump was running by chance. All right I thought no time to panic, and a list of all the places I had to drive for the next few days ran through my mind. Who could I call? Yesterday I was told of a place on the other side of town. That was 24 hours ago. There wasn’t much of a chance fuel was still for sell in that area. I had circled another four stations, grocery stores and out of the way pumps. Large or small, no one was selling fuel. As I puttered down a stretch of highway, my mind raced to the demands I was willing to make before turning around and sitting at home on empty. I turned into the last station I was willing to check, and then I saw it. Was it really? I kept asking myself. As the light sat on red I could see across the street the Kroger busy with traffic. Were they open, will they still have fuel, will the prices be out of our small budget reach? Everything was flowing through my brain, but the traffic was crawling. In slow motion I turned, and turned some more following a lady with her cigarette stuck out the window. How does she afford that as I tried to think of other things to pass time. The drive across the street seemed to stretch out and I longed for food and fuel. There it was! The line was long, I counted eight pumps on the side my line would be allowed. Oh I see now, the employees were organizing the traffic flow for speed and accurate service. Way to go Kroger. One man was directing the cars ahead of me to the pump number we should drive to. He wore a firefighter t shirt. I was car number five in line and every pump had two or three cars waiting. The line was moving fast, but several times people drove into the station from other entrances and had to be stopped for pulling in close to the pump. I smiled, glad I had entered on the side and found the line swiftly. I followed the lady who still enjoyed her cigarette then was given my pump number. Thank you I called out the window to the man in the firefighter’s shirt. I was curious how he was chosen to stand and direct traffic. Another employee was busy closer to the pump answering questions directing more cars, backing people up to stay in the proper lines, helping and assisting everyone. I finally found my entrance and thought for a moment about how to make the process of pumping fuel into my car quick and easy for all those still waiting. I counted at least ten cars in the line at that point. After sliding my credit card in I formulated how much I was willing to spend for fuel today. There were no signs posted for the price. When the amount read on the register twenty dollars under what I planned to cap my purchase the machine clicked off and stopped pumping. My first thought was they were only allowing us so much, then I got in the Tahoe and saw my gauge read full for the moment sweetie and saw the rainbow. There he was- I shouted thank you to the man once again and to the lady working close, then I praised the one who gave me this fuel today. The one and only Lord God for this small gesture of love showing me who is in charge and never to give in to anything else but faith in HIM.
