Supernatural Favor

By: Jennifer Hallmark

The word supernatural, while not found in scriptures means in Webster’s Dictionary-an order of existence beyond the natural world; pertaining to a divine power. I love the definition for favor given in the Vines Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament words-grace on the part of the giver. Supernatural favor is a term we can use to describe the favor bestowed upon us by God; shown for no natural reason.
Natural favor can be earned by our actions. When you give someone a gift, usually you will receive favor in return; they are grateful for the gift. Supernatural favor is when you are favored having done nothing to deserve or earn it. It is grace freely given. An example of supernatural favor could be when you receive a promotion at work and when asked the supervisor can’t really tell you why you were promoted. Other people around could be more deserving as far as experience or skills. “But God…”
“A good man obtains favor from the Lord, but a man of wicked intentions He will condemn.” Proverbs 12:2 NKJV
God promises us favor in His Word. We were made righteous when we were born again, grace freely given by Jesus’ death on the cross and resurrection, thus obtaining favor from God. It is nothing we can brag about; Jesus paid the price for our redemption.
The “good” in a “good man obtains favor” simply means “to be good.” Good in one’s character or constitution would warrant one to show goodness outwardly through action and inwardly through relationship with God.
To have this “goodness” it would make sense that a person would follow the leading of the Lord both in His written Word and the still, small voice spoken to our heart. When we listen to God, He will lead us to do what He has written in His Word, thus obedience is born. God will put on our heart good deeds and acts concerning things of the kingdom. Jesus went around fully obedient to His Father and good works abounded and He expects nothing less of us. We listen, obey and believe, believe that God is working in and through us.
We need to have a right attitude toward others in what we do. We need to learn to have a servant’s heart at home, at the job and in church and surrounding community; a heart that doesn’t have to be recognized and honored. This could range from being a financial blessing to someone without telling anyone or doing the right thing when no one is watching. We need to fight the temptation to call out, “See what I did!”
“Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven. Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.” Matthew 6:1-4 NKJV
We need to let God be our rewarder for He can do exceedingly, abundantly above all that we ask or think. As we turn things over to God and let Him give us supernatural favor we will start to notice the change. We won’t have to strive and push to win favor from others. God will lead us to do positive things and will provide the favor we need. People will want to be around us and we will be esteemed over others. Examples of this are found over and over in the Bible such as the story of Esther, David and others.
Remember, God is always looking for a humble and teachable heart, one open to the leading of God. A person with this heart can be blessed and still give God the glory. Let us all be open to receiving the supernatural favor of God. Listen, obey and believe; God wants to bless you!
