Retreat

By: Nickie Schweitzer

When I think of a retreat I think of the Lord Himself welcoming me with wide open arms as if I were coming home from a long journey. No other place is quite so comforting, quite so secure...quite so peaceful.

So often we get so easily distracted by the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The telephone, the computer, the household chores, the errands, the family are all competing for our time. I’m reminded of the “Tyranny of the Urgent”. We somehow let all these things crowd out the one truly important thing, the Lord Himself! When all the while if we could only turn it around the other way and adjust our priorities to keep the Lord at the top of the list we would find those other things miraculously falling into place... their rightful place.

My daughter is in a performance at church this weekend called “Living inside out in an upside down world”. One of the lines in the theme song asks “Have you ever put your shirt on inside out?” Well, that little phrase made me think of how funny we would all look if we were all walking around with our clothes on inside out, and yet, this is exactly how we look to the Lord. We think we are all that with all the right clothes, shoes, accessories and makeup... and yet all the Lord sees is our pitiful little hearts longing to fit into a world that is not our home. The world is completely and utterly upside down. No wonder we are tired and frazzled. We are spinning our wheels trying so hard to fit a square peg into a round hole. We are not of this world!

He longs to see us longing for Him more than we long for anything this world has to offer. Do you long for Him? I mean truly hunger and thirst for the Lord? He is all we need to satisfy us.

“As the dear pants for streams of water, so my soul pants after you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?”
Ps 42:1-2

Take advantage of your retreat and take time to really “be” with the Lord. Don’t just get away from the hustle and bustle around you but get away from the hustle and bustle in you and REST in the Lord. Allow him to calm your mind and heart and just hold you with his tender arms. He’s waiting. He can provide that much needed rest.
“Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for you souls. Matthew 11:28 & 29
