Know Thyself

By: Sister Alissa Lynne

Gnothi Seauton – Know Thyself

Deuteronomy 10:12 And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul

The truth of me and a lot of us, sisters/women… how well do we know who we are? We have so many hats that we wear. We are mother, sister, aunt, wife, employee, maid, chef, chauffeur and this is not just in duties that we do. Most of my life I was referred to as Linda’s eldest daughter, Walter’s big sister, the twins sister, the eldest granddaughter and then came C’s wife, Jonathan’s mom and the boss. I was so much to everyone else that I forgot who I was. I had no idea who Alissa Lynne was at all.

I was talking to a sister yesterday via email about this very thing. She felt that was what was going on with her and knowing some of the situation, I believe she is right. We are quick as women to allow our duties, functions of life, and people in our lives take over so much that we do not know who we are.

It was not until I came to Jesus did I even start to see who the real me was. It was not until I allowed the love of Jesus to penetrate my heart to hear what the Lord was saying to me about me. I know that some of us have to experience a loss of something to get to this point and then again some never do. I believe that my mother died not knowing her worth in this world to those around her and truly not knowing who she was for herself.

So many of us do not really get to know who we are until one day Jesus starts speaking to us about it, we finally hear Him. Some of us experience it like I did as when I started coming to terms that my ex husband was gone forever, some of us are after the death of a close love one such as parent or husband, some of us just sink into a low depression and in doing that we finally hear Him speaking to us.

I wrote a piece once on “What is your worth?” What are you worth to you? It is really something how we do not truly know who we are but the awesome thing is that the Lord brings it all to pass and we will see what our worth is in Him. Once we see the growth in us in Him, He will show us so much more of who we are in Him. Sometimes it takes some kind of tragedy to us for us to stop going through the “normal” routine of life so that we can hear what the Lord has to say to us.

I know that molding in Jesus is a process, life is a process. In all of this that we go through, there comes a point when we are just going through the motions because we are at that point in our lives, so the Lord wants us to grow more in Him and get to know more about Him…one of those processes is getting to know who we are. It is in Him that we get our strength no doubt but we also have to know who we are deep inside. So this means spending time with ourselves and with the Lord. It is truly a process for us and a revelation in Jesus when we come to see who we are in Him.

The truth for today for me is that I was 37 years old when I started to know myself…it was something as I got up from crying all night long, looked in the mirror and for about 2 minutes I was blessed to see who I was. I was blessed to see a woman that I liked. I had was never before able to see who I was for that long of a period of time. I would block out who I was as I never wanted to see her, to deal with all that she had inside of her. It was after that brief 2 minutes of seeing her that the Lord used those moments to speak to me. I was blessed as I heard Him and knew that I was worth something to Him. It sparked me to strive to know Him better and to know me better. It is why I am stronger this day in the Lord, for I am learning who I am in Him…not Jonathan’s mom, the twins sister, Walter’s sister, Merv’s wife, or even Sister Alissa Lynne but just plain Alissa Lynne – the woman that I am to me! It is awesome and the love that flows from me is in the Lord and it is truly a great feeling to know oneself!

May each of us today be encouraged to love who we are and not mask it but take the time to start coming to see who we truly are in the Lord for He is God and truly the only way to walk in our lives. If you are struggling with things in your life that are just so overwhelming…you are not sure where to go or what to do…take the time today and start to deal with who you are inside and see if this might help you in hearing more of the Lord in your life.
God bless and until tomorrow…

Your sister in Christ,
Sister Alissa Lynne
