Be Still and Know that I am God

By: Janice Davis Steele

Be Still and Know that I Am God

No one is immune from challenges. If you are breathing, then you will face challenges in your life. This is not a negative confession; it is simply the truth.

Jesus said, “I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace and confidence. In the world you will have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer [take courage; be confident, certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.]” John 16:33 [Amplified Version.] Psalm 34:19 says “Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivers him out of them all.”

Everyone, at some point in life, faces tribulation, affliction, trials, distress and frustration. Our response to these challenges will determine whether we partake of the triumph of Jesus Christ and overcome, or whether we will allow the challenges to get the better of us. The worst response we can have when faced with challenges is to allow our senses or the circumstances to dominate us. Feelings of anger, bitterness, strife, fear, hopelessness, grief, envy, pain, and so on, may want to rise up within you. If you go with that flow and allow those feelings to dominate, you will bring “confusion and every evil work” right along with those feelings (James 3:14). When the spirit of confusion and when the evil workings of hell show up, matters can go from bad to worse.

If you want to walk in the overcoming power of the Lord Jesus Christ, you cannot allow your emotions to take over. When you sense yourself moving in the direction of your senses, this is what you must do: BE STILL! Psalm 46 speaks a hidden wisdom and provides sage instruction on how you can triumph even in the midst of a challenge.

Psalm 46 says, in part, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. * * * * He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire. Be still and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.” Psalm 46:1-5; 9-11.

When pressures mount, tensions increase, and you don’t know which way to turn, it is important to BE STILL and know that God is your refuge and strength, and that He will help you.
The word “still” that appears in Psalm 46 is the Hebrew word “rapha.” It is the only time the word “still” is translated “rapha” in the Old Testament. “Rapha” is one of the redemptive names of Jesus. Jehovah Rapha means the Lord who heals you. That word “rapha” in Psalm 46 means both “still” and “healing.”

You see it is necessary to get still before God to let Him heal your condition. A surgeon cannot operate on a jittery, fidgeting patient. That is why patients receive local or general anesthesia. In a similar manner, when challenges come against you, it is crucial to get quiet before God with the understanding that Jesus, The Great Physician, will perform in you and for you what needs to be performed to turn that condition around.

As you quiet yourself before the Lord, He will make His presence known to you. The Lord will impart revelation knowledge, the medicine of His Word, and the spirit of wisdom, counsel and might. The Lord will change your perspective of the challenge. Your perspective makes the difference between triumph and defeat. The Lord will show you the opportunity in the midst of the obstacle. He will show you your miracle in the midst of the mayhem!

Moses learned how to quiet himself before God and receive answers to the many challenges he faced: the Red Sea, the Egyptians, lack of water, lack of food, etc. In fact, it was Moses who said, “Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will show you today: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen today, ye shall see them again no more for ever. The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.” Exodus 14:13-14. On another occasion, Moses said, “Stand still, and I will hear what the Lord will command concerning you.” Numbers 9:8. Moses understood the importance of shutting out distractions, and in getting still before God in order to receive instructions from Him.

So, BE STILL! Get quiet before God and allow Him to perform surgery. Turn off the telephones, beepers, and televisions. Drive to the mountains or a secluded location. Spend time just worshipping the Lord. Do whatever is necessary to declutter your mind and emotions, get quiet before the Lord, and let Him heal your condition. Once you decide to be still and let the Lord operate on your case, you will know that you know that you know that He, indeed, is God!
