A Challenge to Christians

By: Nathanael Hovda

Americans in the twenty first century have seen secularism rise to new heights in every facet of our society. It’s sweeping across everything from politics to academics and it’s time that we take a stand and claim back what is rightfully ours….truth. The intellectually elite have convinced the young impressionable minds in our country that Christianity is an old fashioned oppressive belief. Our youth are being attacked on every level with this narcissistic perception while the church is quietly gathering in our comfortable buildings and turning a blind eye to this epidemic. It is not good enough that we meet on Sunday mornings and wag our fingers at the travesties that are taking place. It seems almost as if these elitists have convinced us that Christ doesn’t have a place in our evolving society. We are in desperate need of a wakeup call. We should not be intimidated by those intellectuals who are spreading this nonsense. It is us, not them who have truth and logic on our side. Christ does not call us to be “nice guys” he calls us to be warriors. He is a God of love, but he is also a God who will return to this earth with a double-edged sword dipped in blood.
We don’t have to look far to see the emptiness and destruction this twisted way of thinking has left behind. Secularism caters to the mind and body but ignores the most important part of every person’s being, the soul. We are now seeing the masses try to fill this void with material things, sexual desires and even the environment that God created for our use. As a result our country is in the worst economic crisis of the past fifteen years, there are a staggering number of kids growing up without fathers and we are seeing millions of dollars going to save trees and polar bears while people all over the world starve to death because they can’t afford they’re next meal. Of course we need to be good stewards of God’s amazing creation, but we are not here to “save the earth”, we are here to save the souls. We have the message of hope that these people so desperately need.
While it is important for us to be active on individual issues, it is not enough that view this from a strictly political point of view. The problem of secularism will continue to spiral downward if we don’t start attacking the source of the problem instead of the symptoms. This is a critical time in our nation’s history. We are facing problems on a level that people of my generation have never seen. It is not a time to lose heart however; it is a time to rise to the challenge. As the old saying goes, steel is made strong by fire and the hammer. Christ does some of his greatest work in difficult times and He is calling us to be the instrument of that work.
